Lead Hazard Control Program
The Shelby County Lead Hazard Control Program (LHCP) funded in part by a 2016 Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control Grant award by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) – Office of Healthy Homes and Lead Hazard Control (OHHLHC) to the Shelby County Department of Housing (SCDH). The purpose of the grant program is to identify and control lead-based paint hazards in eligible privately owned housing for rental or owner-occupants.
If your home was built before 1978, if a child 5 years old or younger resides in your home and/or spends any time at your home, that child may be exposed to lead-based paint hazards and at risk of becoming lead poisoned. The SCHD Lead Hazard Control Program provides free assistance to homeowners who want to protect themselves and their family from lead-based paint hazards.
The Lead Hazard Control Program assists homeowners’ who can meet the following qualifications:
- The property must be in Shelby County, Tennessee and must be owner-occupied.
- Child/children 5 years old or younger old must live or spend time at the home.
- Homeowners must meet HUD income requirements:

Shelby County Department of Housing also has a target area that consists of the following zip codes: 38106, 38107, 38109, 38111, 38114, 38118, 38122, 38126, 38127 and 38128. Applications for assistance are reviewed and approved on a first come/first served basis.
How to Apply
To apply for assistance, complete the application for the Lead Hazard Control Program. Be sure all questions are answered and the requested documentation is returned with the application.
