Tami Sawyer (D)

Title: Commissioner: District 7

Tami Sawyer was elected to the Shelby County Board of Commissioners to represent District 7 on August 2, 2018. Her commission district includes parts of the communities of Midtown and Binghampton in Shelby County.

Tami was raised in Memphis and is a proud graduate of St. Mary’s Episcopal School and the University of Memphis. She spent seven years as a Human Capital/Diversity analyst for PEO IWS for the US Navy, and is currently a Managing Director of Diversity & Community Partnerships for Teach for America-Memphis. She is also founder of the social justice movement #takeemdown901.

Tami Sawyer was one of “18 Tennesseans to Watch in 2018” according to The Tennessean, and one of “5 Women to Watch” according to the Memphis Business Journal. She is a published author with the Huffington Post, CNN and MLK50; a featured political/social justice analyst with Al-Jazeera, NPR, and BBC; she has also been a featured speaker with MLK50 and TEDx.

Ms. Sawyer is an active member of several clubs, organizations, and boards, such as the Governance Chair, Planned Parenthood of Tennessee and North Mississippi, Political Action Chair with the NAACP Memphis branch, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Links, Inc., and Founder of Memphis for All.

Commissioner Sawyer’s interests include tennis, social justice activism, and reading.
